GEEREF is a private equity fund-of-funds targeting clean infrastructure projects in developing markets. The Fund offers private investors access to earlier stage projects in these markets with significant downside protection through the Funds’ unique public/private partnership structure. The Fund was developed in 2008 to catalyze private sector investment into clean infrastructure and encourage sustainable development in these markets, increasing access to clean and affordable energy. GEEREF is managed by the European Investment Bank, which has considerable private equity and energy experience in emerging markets.
GEEREF will invest in renewable energy projects in emerging markets, in many cases providing power generation capacity where none previously existed. The Fund’s investments aim to increase the availability of electricity globally as well as displace the “business as usual” energy development pathway that has historically depended on fossil fuels. Through its investment program, GEEREF will aim to improve access to electricity in developing countries, increase MWh of installed renewable energy capacity, increase MWh of energy conserved via energy efficiency projects, create jobs and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
